We often find it possible to leave abusive or rejecting adult relationships, but when it’s our own children, it can feel impossible. Everyday challenges like verbal put-downs, broken doors, rejection, aggression, or even bruises can leave a lasting impact.
While we may not be able to change the circumstances, we can learn trauma-informed tools to calm a stressed nervous system. In this six-week group, we will use:
EMDR/ASSYST protocols for recent or prolonged traumatic stress
Cognitive Processing Therapy
Other trauma-informed strategies to support healing and resilience
Facilitator:

Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect in the group?
The group is meant to support overstressed and traumatized adoptive and foster caregivers. The group meeting structure includes time to vent/commiserate for approximately 20 minutes, with the final 40 minutes set aside for trauma-informed strategies, pulled from various modalities such as Cognitive Processing Therapy and EMDR-GTEP/ASSYST models for prolonged and recent traumatic stress. Please note: this is NOT psychotherapy.
What is EMDR?
Together we’ll use your brain’s innate ability to heal to move beyond traumatic experiences and into the future with greater ease. Then we’ll focus on different memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation. This stimulation can take various forms, such as tapping or bilateral movements of the eyes, hands, or other parts of the body. This allows the brain to reprocess those events so that you can replace distressing thoughts with positive resolution and relief. EMDR doesn’t change your circumstances, but it DOES help heal a frayed nervous system.
Can EMDR really be effective online and in a group setting?
Yes! Since COVID, providers have been able to successfully modify EMDR for online usage. EMDR-PRECI and ASSYST are both designed specifically for group application. They were initially used for community members who experienced a natural disaster or accident, first responders, and military service members. Now, its use has been tested for efficacy with all sorts of trauma, providing a high level of successful treatment of ongoing or recent trauma.
